HISTORY

The Oakes Community Hospital Auxiliary was organized by Sister Mary Agnes in 1952 when she recognized a need for additional amenities for patients and visitors while at the Oakes Community Hospital. The first meeting was held on March 22, 1952. In 1959 Irene Sanders served as secretary and Kathleen Rehovsky was the treasurer. Mary Ellen Buchanan, Marlys Podolak, Margaret DuRand and Pauline Roney were among the officers of the auxiliary which had 98 members. In 1961, membership had increased to 127 members and met monthly with special programs and lunch.

The group organized such activities as the big name bands events to include the likes of Guy Lombardo, the Silver Teas and the Fall Fiesta. The famous Ice Cream Socials were held on the hospital grounds for a number of years and then were held at the Oakes Armory and the St. Charles Social Center. The Gift Shop was also managed by the volunteers and was convenient for picking up a little something for a family member or friend of the hospital. Over the years one thing has not changed, everything the organization does directly benefits the welfare of our patients and visitors to the hospital.
