The Oakes City Council has enacted a City Ordinance designating areas for the use of snowmobiles within the city limits.
Snowmobiles may be operated in the following manner and with the following equipment in working condition:
All snowmobiles must be registered. The registration must be at least one and one-half inches in height, made of reflective material and affixed on each side of the snowmobile in an unobstructed location. Registration fees are $40.00 for residents and $15.00 for a North Dakota registration for snowmobiles registered in another state. A snowmobile may NOT be operated without liability insurance.
Snowmobiles must be operated on alleys and shall stop before crossing streets and avenues. Snowmobiles must travel in the same direction as normal traffic and may not tow any type of sled, skid or other vehicle within the city limits.
Operators and riders under the age of 18 must wear a Department of Transportation approved helmet. Operator must have a valid driver´s license or permit.

All snowmobiles must obey all traffic and safety laws and are subject to fines and penalties as set by the North Dakota Century Code.

The Oakes City Council has enacted a City Ordinance allowing off-highway vehicles to be operated within the city limits.
An individual with a valid driver´s license or permit may operate an off-highway vehicle (ATV) on a street or alley only if it is equipped with the following equipment, all of which must be in working order:
Vehicles must be registered. Registration fee for each off-highway vehicle (ATV) is $10.00 for two years which includes $5.00 for license and $5.00 for trail tax. Registration must be displayed in the appropriate location on the off-highway vehicle (ATV).
Passengers and/or riders are only allowed on vehicles designed to carry more than one person. Operators and riders under the age of 18 must wear a Department of Transportation approved helmet. If the operator is under the age of 18, the passenger must wear a helmet regardless of age.
Off-highway vehicles (ATV) may NOT be operated on a street or alley without liability insurance. All off-highway vehicles (ATV) must obey all traffic and safety laws and are subject to fines and penalties as set by the North Dakota Century Code.
