The Tree Board was established in 2007 to help educated the public and promote the importance of trees in our community.
The City of Oakes was honored at the Tree City USA Recognition Program and horticulture tour, held on July 17, 2008, at NDSU Absaraka Horticulture Research Farm.
According to State Forester Larry Kotchman, forty-eight communities were recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation for developing programs to preserve and enhance their trees. Oakes received a certificate and was recognized for its first year of achieving Tree City USA Status. The Tree City USA program is administered by the National Arbor Day Foundation, and is sponsored by the National Association of State Foresters, the USDA Forest Service, US Conference of Mayors, and the National Leagues of Cities. The ND Forest Service has administered the program in North Dakota since the inception of the program in 1976.
"Trees in our cities help clean the air, conserve soil and water, moderate temperature, and bring nature into our daily lives. Trees are a vital component of the infrastructure in our cities and towns, and provide environmental and economical benefits. A community, and its citizens, that recognize these benefits and provide needed care for its trees deserves recognition and thanks."
